SPUS GREEN KNIGHTS OVERCOME LATE FOURTH-QUARTER DROUGHT

Too thirsty after years of Mayor’s Cup drought, the ever-vengeful St. Paul Univeristy Surigao’s Green Knights wrapped up its long-awaited championship that put to rest the Surigao Del Norte State University Men’s Basketball Team, 84-83, during the 1st Batang Surigaonon Mayor’s Cup 2022 Championship Game at the Surigao City Gymnasium last December 23, 2022.

Mikhael Arana scored 22 points and led Kenneth Navarro to deliver historical shot on the crucial part of the game.

The game started a fadeaway encounter and the first half ended 19-21 with SNSU on the lead.

The second half was still close and SNSU took the lead with two minutes to go, but Perez displayed a big heart as he connected a three-pointer to give SPUS Green Knights its last three points, 28-31.

SPUS Green Knights carried that decisive moment and tied the game at 76-all with 15 seconds to go.

Mikhael Arana fished a lay-up with 10 seconds left and split his charity for the lead before being fouled out in the game.

Kenneth Navarro refused to give up after Arana being fouled out and took a chance by maneuvering his last desperate shot which went into the ring, 84-83.

“To be honest it was really unexpected. Since the start of the tournament we already considered our team as the underdogs because the last season we played, we were at the bottom of the standings and didn't get a single victory. I would like to commend Kenneth Navarro for stepping up and for giving it all especially with that last shot, the historical shot.," said Arana.
